Youth Cell Group / Celula de Jovenes

The way youth group is set up here in Nicaragua is that a president, vice president, etc are selected from among the youth. They serve for one year with the counsel of the pastor. (The year before we got married Orlando served as vice president.) It can mean a really good year - fun, exciting, lots of growth (personally as well as in numbers) - or it can mean for a flop of a year. We have seen both happen during our time here and it is really no one's fault. Sometimes the one selected as president just doesn't have the right personality or "go-get'em" attitude. Sometimes they just aren't supported by the youth at all. It is a good opportunity though to encourage responsibility and let the youth's voice be heard in the church.

This year the new youth president asked us if we would host the first cell group of the year. Of course we gladly opened our home. So two weeks ago we had 10 youth come to our house. It is a time of singing, prayer, a short reflection, and if there is time, games and refreshments. The reflection was about trusting God even when we don't know what is coming next. A short story was told about a mountain climber who was excited to do his first solo ascent. But it took longer than he had planned and a storm started to roll in; he fell. He had been tied in and after falling and finally being suspended in the air by the rope, he prayed for God to tell him what to do. He felt that God told him to cut the rope. Out of fear of not knowing what was below him, the mountain climber instead clung to the rope. Sadly when search and rescue workers found him, they found a frozen man clinging to a rope just 3 feet off the ground. If he had trusted God and cut the rope he would have survived. We were challenged to thing of how we would respond in a situation like that, and in the storms that come our way in life.

During the refreshments (Snickerdoodles and Ice Tea), we also challenged the youth with a Chronological Bible reading plan for the year. It is something we ourselves have decided to do and since we hosted the first cell group of the year we thought it would be a good time to challenge the youth to join us. There are at least three or four that have accepted the challenge that we know of.

La forma en que funciona el grupo de jóvenes aquí en Nicaragua es que un presidente, vicepresidente, etc se seleccionan de entre los jóvenes. Sirven por un año con el consejo del pastor. (El año antes de casarnos Orlando se desempeñó como vicepresidente.) Puede significar un muy buen año - divertido, emocionante, mucho crecimiento (personalmente, y así como en números) - o puede significar un fracaso de un año. Hemos visto ambos tipos suceder durante nuestro tiempo aquí y es realmente culpa de nadie. A veces el seleccionado como presidente simplemente no tiene la personalidad adecuada o actitud de motivación. A veces simplemente no son apoyados por los jóvenes en absoluto. Es una buena oportunidad para fomentar la responsabilidad y dejar que la voz de los jóvenes se escuche en la iglesia.

Este año, el nuevo presidente de la juventud nos preguntó si nos gustaría acoger el primer grupo de células del año. Por supuesto, estaremos encantados de abrir nuestra casa. Así que hace dos semanas tuvimos 10 jóvenes que vinieron a nuestra casa. Es un tiempo del canto, la oración, una breve reflexión, y si hay tiempo, juegos y refrigerios. La reflexión fue acerca de confiar en Dios aun cuando no sabemos lo que viene después. Una pequeña historia se le dijo acerca de un alpinista que se emocionó al ver su primera ascensión en solitario. Pero tuvieron que pasar más tiempo del que había planeado y una tormenta comenzó a rodar; él cayó. Lo había atado en una cuerda y después de la caída y finalmente estaba suspendido en el aire por la cuerda, él oró a Dios para que le diga qué hacer. Sentía que Dios le dijo que cortara la cuerda. Por miedo de no saber lo que estaba por debajo de él, el alpinista se aferró a la cuerda. Lamentablemente, cuando los trabajadores de búsqueda y rescate lo encontraron, hallaron a un hombre congelado aferrado a una cuerda a sólo 1 metro del suelo. Si él hubiera confiado en Dios y cortar la cuerda hubiera sobrevivido. Nos desafía a cosa de cómo íbamos a responder en una situación así, y en las tormentas que se nos presentan en la vida.

Durante los refrescos (Snickerdoodles y Té Frío) también desafiamos a los jóvenes con un plan de lectura cronológica de la Biblia para el año. Es algo que nosotros mismos hemos decidido hacer y ya que fue sede del primer grupo de células del año pensamos que sería un buen momento para desafiar a los jóvenes a unirse a nosotros. Hay por lo menos tres o cuatro que han aceptado el reto que nosotros sepamos.

2 Years! / ¡2 Años!

In the midst of the chaos that was December, we passed the 2 year milestone on December 20th. We had fun plans but Andrea returned from Costa Rica sick just the day prior so those plans were canceled. Instead we spent the day with Orlando taking care of Andrea. Orlando did go out and bring home some dinner but Andrea could only manage to eat half of it. Oh well, celebration or not we have made it into year 3. We have learned a lot during these short two years and we have grown closer to God and closer to each other through it all. We both feel so blessed to live out this crazy life together as husband and wife.

En medio del caos que era diciembre, logramos pasar por 2 años el 20 de diciembre. Teníamos planes de diversión, pero Andrea volvió enferma de Costa Rica justo el día antes para que esos planes fueron cancelados. En cambio, nos pasamos el día con Orlando cuidando a Andrea. Orlando salió y trajo a casa una cena, pero Andrea sólo pudo comer la mitad de ella. Ni modo, celebración o no, hemos llegado al año 3. Hemos aprendido mucho durante estos cortos dos años, y hemos crecido más cerca de Dios y más cerca el uno al otro a pesar de todo. Ambos nos sentimos muy afortunados de vivir esta vida loca juntos como marido y mujer.

Graduation Celebration / La Celebración de la Graduación

Since Orlando's graduation was on a Sunday afternoon, we decided to celebrate the following Saturday, January 4th. We had a great time with friends and family. We wanted to make the day fun and a little different so we had some games set up on the patio - darts and a throw the ball at the cans game. We also played a game from the time guests arrived until just after we ate -- everyone upon arriving received 4 clothespins; if someone said "Orlando", "Graduation", or "Diploma" they lost a clothespin to whomever heard them say the forbidden word. At the end, the person with the most clothespins won a prize. It was a great way to get everyone to interact. We also had a photo booth set up which was a fantastic way to get photos of all who came. We enjoyed a nice meal of grilled chicken, salad, rice, and tostones and Andrea made an unforgettable dessert of chocolate cupcakes filled with dulce de leche frosted with vanilla frosting and topped with a little diploma and graduation cap.  (Photos below Spanish)

La graduación de Orlando fue en un domingo por la tarde entonces decidimos celebrar el sábado siguiente, 4 de enero. Tuvimos un gran tiempo con amigos y familia. Queríamos hacerlo un día de diversión y un poco diferente, así que tuvimos algunos juegos en el patio - dardos y tiro la pelota en el juego de las latas. También jugamos a un juego desde el momento en que los invitados llegaron hasta justo después que comimos. Todo el mundo al llegar recibió 4 prensaropas, y si alguien decía "Orlando," "Graduación," o "Diploma" perdían un prensaropa a quien le oyó  decir la palabra prohibida. Al final, la persona con el mayor número de prensaropas ganó un premio. Fue una buena manera para que la gente podrían interactuar. También habíamos creado una área de fotos, que era una fantástica manera de capturar fotos de todos los que vinieron. Disfrutamos de una buena comida de pollo a la parrilla, ensalada, arroz y tostones y Andrea hizo un postre inolvidable de pastelitos de chocolate rellenos de dulce de leche cubierto con glaseado de vainilla y tapado con una pequeña diploma y gorro de graduación. Orlando's Graduation / La Graduación de Orlando

He did it! Orlando graduated from University with his degree in Systems Engineering on December 29th. He is one of few in his family to have a University degree; and out of fifty that he started studying with, he is one of the four that made it to the end and graduated. During the course of his studies he overcame his second battle of Tuberculosis, and also had a long walk just to get to class. Not to mention those nights he had to stay up guarding the cows and still go to class the next morning. It hasn't been easy but he persevered and made it to the end. Now onto the next adventure!

Él lo hizo! Orlando se graduó de la universidad con su título en Ingeniería de Sistemas, el 29 de diciembre. Él es uno de los pocos en su familia que logro tener un título universitario; y de los cincuenta que comenzaron a estudiar esa carrera, él es uno de los únicos cuatro que llegaron al final y se graduaron. Durante el transcurso de sus estudios, se sobrepuso de su segunda batalla contra la Tuberculosis, y también caminó un largo camino para ir a clase. Y sin mencionar esas noches que tuvo que quedarse despierto cuidando las vacas y todavía ir a clase al día siguiente. No ha sido fácil, pero perseveró y llegó hasta el final. Ahora ¡vamos con la próxima aventura!
