Our church here in Nicaragua used to be recipients of Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. We've heard varying stories as to why we no longer receive the boxes, but regardless of the reason, our church has decided to do their own version. There are over 100 children that attend Sunday School at our church, many of which aren't from Christian families but simply get sent by their parents. Our church decided that they want each of these children to be sponsored to receive a gift at Christmas. So this past Sunday, we had a special service at church to kick off the sponsorship. They have been carefully collecting data of each of the children (age, name, address, parents names, etc) and taking their photos so that we can know who we are sponsoring and be praying specifically for our child. It was done very official, with our signatures as well as the director of Sunday School and the Pastor's signatures.
In preparation of this event, we were asked along with Orlando's mom to do the decorations. This service was a "Siembra"; the Spanish word "sembrar" means to sow or plant, so we are sowing into the lives of these children. Based on the fact that it was a Siembra we wanted to decorate accordingly. They also mentioned the theme of the multiplication of the bread and fish (Matthew14:13-20). Orlando's mom is becoming quite the pro at making piñatas so she made some baskets with bread and fish in them. Andrea got the idea of having 4 banners in the church. One with a farmer sowing seed with a little boy in a field, and then one with a wheat field ready for harvest. Another with a fisherman throwing a net into the sea with a little boy, and then a fisherman pulling in a net full of fish.
The banners turned out to be more work than anticipated and included staying up late many nights and working all day... but they were more than worth it. We were all quite pleased with the finished product and excited to bless the church with these decorations. During the service Orlando was called up to explain the banners a little and he did a marvelous job. He started with the fisherman and how first you have to cast out the net, kind of like sharing the gospel. But you can't pull it in right away, you have to wait patiently until it is ready and then you can pull in the full net. It's not always an immediate return. Then he explained the farmer and just like the earth is fertile soil for the seeds to be sown in, children are also like fertile soil ready to be sown into. And when we sow into the life of a child, we get to see the harvest in their youth.

En el pasado nuestra iglesia aquí en Nicaragua recibió las cajas de la navidad de la Bolsa Samaritana. Hemos escuchado varias historias de la razon que no seguimos recibiendolas, pero no importa la razón, nuestra iglesia ha decidido a hacer su propia version. Hay más de 100 niños que asisten a la escuela dominical en nuestra iglesia, muchos no son de familias cristianas sino que sus padres solo los envian. Nuestra iglesia decidio que desean que cada uno de estos niños sea patrocinado para recibir un reglalo para la Navidad. Entonces el domingo pasado tuvimos un culto especial para empezar la patronisacion. Los maestros han estado recolectando la informacion de cada niños (su edad, nombre, direcion, nombres de los padres, etc.) y tomando sus fotos para que podamos conocer a los niños que estamos patronisando y orar por ellos. Lo hicieron muy oficial, con las firmas de nosotros, el director de la escuela dominical y el pastor.
Para la preparación de este evento, nos pidieron a ayudar con las decoraciones. Este culto fue una Siembra porque estamos sembrando en las vidas de los niños. También mencionaron el tema de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces (Mateo 14:13-20). La mamá de Orlando ya es una profesional haciendo piñatas entonces ella hizo algunas canastas con pan y peces. Andrea tenia la idea de tener 4 manteles en la iglesia; uno con un campesino sembrando semillas con un niños y otro con trigo listo para cosechar, otro con un pescador lanzando la red con un niño y otro con el pescador halando la red llena de peces.
Las manteles fueron más trabajo que pensábamos incluyendo que nos desvelavamos muchas noches y trabajando algunos días todo el día.... pero valió la pena. Todos estábamos satisfechos con el producto final y felices para bendecir la iglesia con las decoraciones. Durante el servicio llamaron a Orlando para explicar las manteles y él lo explicó muy bien. Empezó explicando el pescado y que primero uno tiene que lanzar la red, un poco como compartir el evangelio. Pero no lo pueden colectar inmediatamente sino tiene que esperar pacientemente hasta que se llena. Después explicó el sembrado y como la tierra es fértil para sembrar las semillas, los niños también son fértil para sembrar en sus vidas. Cuando uno siembra en la vida de un niño, podemos ver la cosecha en su juventud.
