Keeping Watch at Night / Haciendo Vigilancia

A recent addition to our schedule is going to stay at the farm once a week to help guard. Someone has to stay up all night to keep an eye on things and make sure no one comes in to steal the animals or other things. The animals are clearly the most important, but often times there are fence posts stolen or even beans right out of the field. Since Orlando was the only male in the house before we got married, it has left just his grandma, mom, and sister to take over this task of keeping watch at night. This has always been something that has weighed heavy on our hearts. At first we had talked with Orlando's brother to see if maybe we could go in together on paying a guard for the nights, but that never worked out. So we decided that at least Orlando would go down once a week to stay up all night and be able to give his family a good night's rest. With Orlando's schedule at the University being two full days (as opposed to 4 half days which it usually is) it allows him to go down and not have to worry about getting up and going to class the next day. When possible Andrea likes to accompany him and we make it a family affair. We also take down Jamaica and Kieko (Kari's dog) which are more than happy to play their role in guarding and sounding the alarm when something is astir. To pass the time, we watch movies, play games on the computer, share the Bible, listen to sermons, play games, oh and of course count the animals every so often until 4 am. Then we tuck ourselves in bed and usually fall asleep around 4:30 when the farmhand comes to milk the cows.

Una adición nueva a nuestro horario es ir a la finca para cuidar una vez a la semana. Alguien tiene que desvelarse toda la noche velando que nadie entre a robar los animales u otras cosas. Claro que los animales son los más importantes, pero a veces roban postes del cerco o frijoles directamente del campo. Orlando era el único hombre en la casa antes de casarnos, entonces ahora solo está su abuela, su mamá, y su hermana para asumir esta responsabilidad. Es algo que ha pesado en nuestros corazones. Al principio tratamos de ver si podemos juntar con el hermano de Orlando para pagar a alguien para cuidar la finca en las noches pero nunca le llevamos acabo. Entonces decidimos que al menos Orlando va a ir una vez a la semana y quedar cuidando toda la noche para dar a su familia una buena noche de descanso. El horario de Orlando en la universidad es solo dos días, todo el día (usualmente lo tiene 4 días, medio día) entonces le permite desvelarse sin preocuparse de ir a clase el siguiente día. Cuando es posible Andrea le gusta acompañarlo y lo hacemos como algo familiar. Llevamos también a Jamaica y a Kieko (la perra de Kari) quienes son felices para ayudar y sonar la alarma cuando algo se mueve. Para pasar el tiempo, miramos películas, jugamos con la computadora, compartimos la Biblia, escuchamos predicas, jugamos juegos de mesa, ah y por supuesto contamos los animales cada rato hasta las 4 am. A esa hora nos acostamos y usualmente dormimos dentro de media hora cuando el mozo viene a ordeñar las vacas.
