San Juan del Sur Getaway / Escapada a San Juan del Sur

Andrea first met Heather 7 years ago on a Str8way trip to Alaska. Over the past few years Heather has made several trips to Nicaragua and just recently was down here for 6 months working in Granada. Coming up on her last week in Nicaragua before heading back to freezing temps in the US, she wanted one last beach trip. Since we hadn't been to the beach in over a year we kindly obliged. ;) So on Friday we packed up and headed to San Juan del Sur after Orlando worked half a day at the cyber. We took a bus to Jinotepe, then another bus to Rivas, and yet another bus to San Juan del Sur. We easily found our hotel (Hotel Maracuya - "hotel quality at hostel prices") and were quite pleased. The weekend consisted of lots of time at the beach - just a short walk from the hotel - good food, and great company. The hotel even had a surfboard that was available to guests so Orlando got to give surfing a try. Well, sort of. There weren't really any waves big enough but he perfected his technique of waiting for the perfect wave. We also had a blast with our different sand creations-- Day 1 was a palm tree on the beach complete with coconuts and a sun; Day 2 was a beach umbrella and soccer ball on the beach. A lot of fun (maybe too much fun) was had posing with our sand creations. And then on Sunday after spending the morning at the beach we showered, packed up and headed back to reality. We hope to escape to San Juan del Sur again in the near future. It was just what we had been needing and we all came back refreshed although slightly exhausted physically. This trip was also Orlando's first trip to San Juan del Sur. Andrea loves discovering new parts of Nicaragua with him! (Photos below Spanish)

Andrea conoció a Heather hace 7 años en un viaje de Str8way a Alaska. En los últimos años Heather ha realizado varios viajes a Nicaragua y recientemente estuvo aquí durante los últimos 6 meses trabajando en Granada. Entrando en su última semana en Nicaragua antes de regresar a la congelación de las temperaturas en los EE.UU., Heather quería un último viaje a la playa. Ya que no habíamos ido a la playa en más de un año, que amablemente obligados. ;) Así que el viernes hicimos las maletas y nos dirigimos a San Juan del Sur después de Orlando trabajó medio día en el cyber. Cogimos un autobús a Jinotepe, luego otro bus a Rivas, y sin embargo, otro bus a San Juan del Sur. Muy fácil de encontrar nuestro hotel (el hotel Maracuyá - "la calidad del hotel a precios de hospedaje") y quedamos bastante satisfechos. El fin de semana consistía en un montón de tiempo en la playa - a sólo un corto paseo desde el hotel - buena comida y buena compañía. El hotel incluso tenía una tabla de surf que estaba a disposición de los huéspedes, así que Orlando consiguió dar surf una oportunidad. Bueno, algo así. No había realmente ninguna ola lo suficientemente grande pero perfeccionó su técnica de esperar la ola perfecta. También divertimos con nuestras diferentes creaciones de arena - Día 1 era una palmera en la playa con cocos y un sol; Día 2 era una sombrilla de playa y balón de fútbol en la playa. Se tenía un montón de diversión (quizás demasiado) posando con nuestras creaciones de arena. Y luego el domingo después de pasar la mañana en la playa nos bañamos, empacamos las maletas y nos regresamos de nuevo a la realidad. Esperamos que para escapar a San Juan del Sur en el futuro próximo. Era justo lo que habíamos estado necesario y que todo volvió refrescados aunque un poco agotado físicamente. Este viaje fue también el primer viaje de Orlando a San Juan del Sur. Andrea le encanta descubrir nuevas partes de Nicaragua con él! (Fotos abajo)

Giving Thanks / Dando Gracias

This year we celebrate Thanksgiving on Saturday due to Orlando having to work on Thursday. We invited several friend over and it was a great time had by all. We were reminded (thanks to Kari) of the story in the Bible about the Wedding Banquet. Where the man invites his friends to the wedding banquet but at the last minute they all have excuses not to attend. So he sent the servants out into the streets and tells them to bring whoever they can find because his table will be full. Well we had invited some close friends but at the end several did not show up. Our table was still full though as we had some family and friends stop by and we invited them to stay. It wasn't exactly as we had planned but it was what God had planned and we enjoyed sharing this time with them all. 

Since we couldn't get a turkey easily here (requires trip to Managua and a PriceSmart membership) we roasted 3 whole chickens! It was Andrea's first time cooking any full-size bird but it was a success. We enjoyed chicken, cornbread stuffing (also a first!), mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and broccoli. Of course, we also did the traditional pre-dinner food of a veggie tray and crackers with cheese spread. To finish off the meal we had apple pie and pumpkin cheesecake pie (both huge successes, but forgot to take a picture). (Photos below Spanish)

Este año celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias el sábado debido a Orlando tenia que trabajar el jueves. Invitamos a varios amigos y fue un gran momento había por todos. Se nos recordó (gracias a Kari) de la historia en la Biblia sobre el banquete de bodas. Cuando el hombre invita a sus amigos a la boda, pero en el último momento todos tienen excusas para no asistir. Así que envió sus siervos a la calle y les dice que traerá el que pueden encontrar a causa de su mesa estará llena. Bueno, nosotros habíamos invitado a algunos amigos cercanos, pero al final varios no se presentó. La mesa estaba todavía lleno, ya que nos tuvimos algunos familiares y amigos de visita y les invitamos a quedarse. No era exactamente lo que habíamos planeado, pero era lo que Dios había planeado y disfrutamos de compartir este tiempo con todos ellos.

Ya que no pudimos conseguir un pavo fácilmente aquí (requiere un viaje a Managua y una membresía a PriceSmart) asamos 3 pollos enteros! Era la primera vez que Andrea cocinaba un ave de tamaño completo, pero fue un éxito. Disfrutamos el pollo, relleno de pan de maíz (también la primera vez!), puré de papas y salsa, maíz y brócoli. Por supuesto, también hicimos la tradicional comida antes de la cena en una bandeja de verduras y galletas saladas con queso para untar. Para terminar la comida que tuvimos el pie de manzana y un pie de queso y ayote (ambos grandes éxitos, pero se olvidó de tomar una foto). (Fotos abajo)

Desire's Wedding / La Boda de Desire

On Saturday, we had the pleasure of attending the wedding of one of the youth from the ministry we first partnered with here in Nicaragua. She has grown into such a beautiful young woman. It was also great to see people we haven't seen for awhile and catch up. (Photos below)

El sábado tuvimos el placer de asistir a la boda de una de las jóvenes del ministerio con quien primero asociamos aquí en Nicaragua. Ella se ha convertido en una hermosa mujer joven. También fue genial ver a la gente que no hemos visto por un rato y ponerse al día. (Fotos abajo)

Nica tradition is that the bride and wedding party walk through the streets, 

usually starting at the bride's house and arriving at the church.

Tradición nicaragüense es que la novia y el banquete de boda caminan por las calles,

usualmente comenzando en la casa de la novia y llegando a la iglesia.

Vet Visits / Visitas al Veterinario

This past week we took a venture to Managua for the sake of our dogs. Proverbs 12:10 says: "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel." We are very much dog-people and we love our pups! Our roommate Kari brought her dog, Kieko, with her from the US and Andrea bought Jamaica almost a year before we got married so that we would have a grown guard dog once we were on our own. Kari is now living with us, so we have both Kieko and Jamaica. While they serve well as guard dogs, they are also a part of our family. We have been very blessed with two Christian vets here in Nicaragua. We have a local vet that we use for the small stuff; and then we came into contact with a missionary vet from the US that is based in Managua. We use the US vet for more complicated things and sometimes just to hear things in English! 

We had to go get some blood tests done for Kieko in the morning and then waited around until the afternoon for the results and the vet visit. Since we were making the trip to the "Big City" we decided to take Jamaica along as well to visit her favorite vet. :) We are still working on figuring out if she might have Addison's Disease or something else going on. After her successful surgery in August, she had several complications in recovery and we also came to realize that what we had always thought was normal for her, is actually excessive when it comes to water consumption. We are working on diagnosing her before we hope to take her to the US with us because travel without a diagnosis could be risky, even fatal. Thankfully if it is Addison's as we suspect, there is treatment for it. Our next step will be to take her to Managua to get some blood tests done as well. During this past visit, we confirmed that she does have signs of arthritis in her hips, and we had a biopsy done on a bump she developed in her armpit. The biopsy results are that it is a benign tumor that should resolve itself in 2-3 months.  (Photos below Spanish)

La semana pasada fuimos a una aventura a Managua por el bien de nuestros perros. Proverbios 12:10 dice: "El justo se preocupa por las necesidades de su animal, pero los actos más amables de los impíos son crueles." Somos gente que quiere a los perros y ¡amamos a nuestros cachorros! Nuestro compañero de casa, Kari, trajo a su perro, Kieko, con ella desde los EE.UU. y Andrea compró Jamaica casi un año antes de que nos casamos por lo que tendríamos un perro guardián adulto una vez que estábamos por nuestra cuenta. Kari ahora está viviendo con nosotros, así que tenemos tanto Kieko y Jamaica. Mientras que sirven así como perros guardianes, que son también una parte de nuestra familia. Hemos sido muy bendecidos con dos veterinarios cristianos aquí en Nicaragua. Contamos con un veterinario local que utilizamos para las cosas pequeñas, y entonces entramos en contacto con un veterinario misionero de los EE.UU., que se basa en Managua. Utilizamos el veterinario EE.UU. para cosas más complicadas y, a veces, sólo para escuchar las cosas en Inglés.

Tuvimos que ir a buscar algunos exámenes de sangre para Kieko en la mañana y luego esperamos hasta la tarde para los resultados y la visita al veterinario. Ya que estábamos haciendo el viaje a la "ciudad grande" decidimos llevar Jamaica a lo largo también a visitar a su veterinario preferido. :) Todavía estamos trabajando en averiguar si ella podría tener la enfermedad de Addison o algo más en juego. Después de su exitosa cirugía en agosto, tuvo varias complicaciones en la recuperación y también nos dio cuenta de que lo que siempre habíamos pensado que era normal para ella, en realidad es excesivo cuando se trata de consumo de agua. Estamos trabajando en el diagnóstico de ella antes de que esperamos llevarla a los EE.UU. con nosotros debido a los viajes sin un diagnóstico podría ser arriesgado, incluso mortal. Afortunadamente si es Addison como sospechamos, hay tratamiento para ello. Nuestro próximo paso será que la llevara a Managua para obtener algunos exámenes de sangre también. Durante esta visita pasado, hemos confirmado que ella tiene síntomas de la artritis en las caderas, y tuvimos una biopsia hecha en un bulto que desarrolló en su axila. Los resultados de la biopsia son que es un tumor benigno que debe resolverse en 2-3 meses. (Fotos abajo)
