Easter Art / Arte de la Resurrección

Being a marriage with two distinct cultures we have to evaluate and choose which holidays we want to celebrate. It really hasn't been difficult for us thus far, but it is something we have to think about. Orlando has hardly ever celebrated most major holidays while Andrea has. One holiday Andrea really wants to celebrate in a wholesome reflective way is Easter. Since we currently live in Nicaragua that is difficult to do. We thought our church at least took communion on Resurrection Sunday, but were disappointed to find out they don't. The Catholics do Stations of the Cross and party party party. But what can we do as a family to reflect on the importance of Christ's resurrection and sacrifice? As we begin forming our own family culture we decided to set aside some time one evening and take communion together. On Sunday we didn't have anything planned but Andrea got out some art supplies after breakfast and started fiddling around. Orlando soon joined her and both were inspired. We created some Easter Art. Simple, reflective, purposeful. I (Andrea) hope it becomes a tradition for our family. Enjoy! (photos below)

Siendo un matrimonio con dos culturas distintas tenemos que evaluar y escoger cuales días de festivos queremos celebrar. No ha sido tan difícil hasta ahora, pero sí es algo en que tenemos que pensar. Orlando casi nunca ha celebrado la mayoría de días festivos mientras que Andrea sí. Un día festivo que Andrea quiere celebrar en una manera reflexiva y verdadera es la resurrección. Pero ahora que vivimos en Nicaragua es difícil hacerlo. Pensamos que nuestra iglesia a menos toma la santa cena el domingo de la resurrección, pero estábamos desilusionados cuando supimos que no lo hacen. Los católicos hacen las estaciones de la cruz y fiesta fiesta fiesta. ¿Pero qué podemos hacer como una familia para reflejar la importancia de la resurrección y sacrificio de Cristo? Ahora que estamos formando la cultura de nuestra familia decidimos tomar un tiempo una noche para tomar la santa cena juntos. El domingo no teníamos nada planeado pero Andrea sacó sus materiales de arte y empezó a jugar. Pronto Orlando se sentó con ella y los dos estaban inspirados. Creamos arte de la resurrección. Sencillo, reflexivo, con propósito. Yo (Andrea) espero que sea algo que se convierta en una tradición para nuestra familia. ¡Disfruten!

Indulgences / Indulgencias

Yes, we do indulge every now and then. Usually our indulgences involve food. The other morning a fruit vendor passed by the house. Andrea always has her ear tuned to these call-outs. "Fresas!" Wait, fresas? Yes please! You see, fresas are strawberries and you can rarely find them here. So Orlando opened the door and called back to the guy, "Fresas!". He came to the door and we asked how much they were. 70 cords ($3.04). Yes! I'm pretty sure we made his day as we bought those strawberries, but he definitely made ours. Andrea had just returned from visiting her sister in Washington DC and she brought back a recipe for homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker. On our weekly trip to the store we got all the ingredients except they were out of whipping cream. The stock boy said it would be coming in that afternoon so a few days later we made a special trip just for that heavy whipping cream. Andrea worked her magic in the kitchen. We sliced up the strawberries, and YUM! We enjoyed this little indulgence. The homemade ice cream didn't end up being any cheaper than just buying it at the store, but you can't beat the flavor of homemade ice cream. (photos and recipe below)

Sí, a veces nos consentimos. Usualmente nuestras indulgencias son comidas. La otra mañana un vendedor de fruta pasó por la casa. Andrea siempre tiene su oído entonado a ellos. "Fresas!" Qué, fresas? Sí, por favor! Casi no podemos encontrar fresas aquí. Entonces Orlando abrió la puerta y gritó, "Fresas!" al vendedor. Él vino a la puerta y preguntamos cuanto vale. 70 córdoba ($3.04). Sí! Estoy seguro que hicimos su día comprando esas fresas, pero él difinitivamente hizo nuestro día. Andrea acabó de regresar de su viaje a ver su hermana en Washington DC y trajo una receta para helado casero sin tener que usar una maquina de helado. En nuestra viaje de compras por la semana compramos todos los ingredientes menos la crema dulce. Un trabajador en Palí nos dijo que la crema dulce llegará en la tarde, entonces unos pocos días después hicimos un viaje especial para comprar la crema dulce. Andrea hizo su magia en la cocina. Cortamos las fresas, y YUM! Disfrutamos esta pequeña indulgencia. El helado casero no salió más barato de comprarlo en la tienda, pero no puede superar el sabor de helado casero.

Ready to Indulge / Listo para consentirnos

For those who are curious, here's the recipe:

1 can (14 oz) fat-free sweetened condensed milk
3/4 cup low-fat milk
1 TB vanilla extract
2 cups heavy whipping cream

In a large bowl, with wire whisk, mix condensed milk, low-fat milk, and vanilla until blended. In another large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat cream until stiff peaks form. With rubber spatula, fold whipped cream into milk mixture until blended. Spoon mixture into 9x9 baking dish (metal or glass), cover with foil and freeze for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, stir partially frozen ice cream mixture to evenly distribute frozen edges with not-yet-frozen center. Cover and return to freezer until firm, approx 3 hours or overnight.



Para los que están curioso, aquí esta la receta:

1 lata (14 oz) leche condensada
3/4 taza de leche semi-descremada
1 cucharada de essencia de vainilla
2 tazas de crema dulce

En una pana grande, con un batidor de alambre, mezclar la leche condensada, leche semi-descremada, y vainilla hasta que está bien mezclado. En otra pana grande, con el batidor de velocidad medio, batir la crema dulce hasta que tiene cimas duras. Con una spatula, mezclarla suavemente con la mezcla de leche hasta que está bien mezclado. Poner todo en un recipiente de metal o vidrio, cubrirlo con papel aluminio y ponerlo a congelar por 2 horas.

Después de 2 horas, moverlo para mezclar las partes congelados con los del centro que todavía no están congelados. Cubrirlo de nuevo y regresarlo a congelar, 3 horas o toda la noche.

Our Humble Abode / Nuestra Primera Casa

Enjoy this photo tour of our first little house together! We are renting until June but have already unofficial extended the contract with the landlord through the end of the year. It will be the longest Andrea has lived in one place in Nicaragua! We live on the lower half of Main Street in Diriamba. About half a block from the Cemetery, 3 1/2 blocks from Central Park, 4 houses up from the 4 Square Church, and 50 meters up from the Slaughter house (we hear a lot of piggies squealing at all hours of the night & day).

Disfruten este tour de fotos de nuestra primera casa! Estamos alquilando hasta junio pero ya hemos extendido el contracto inoficialmente por el resto del año. Va a ser el tiempo más largo que Andrea ha vivido en un solo lugar en Nicaragua! Vivimos en la calle principal de Diriamba. Media cuadra del Cemeterio, 3 1/2 cuadras del parque central, 4 casas arriba de la iglesia cuadrangular, y 50 metros arriba del rastro (podemos oir chanchitos gritando a todas horas de la noche y día.)

Washington DC

So it has been a VERY long time since a blog update! Our apologies. Shortly after getting settled into our house as a married couple, Andrea's computer met it's end.... and unfortunately all of our photos were on it. We were able to rescue the information and photos but it has been a patient process. We thankfully have Orlando's computer but it isn't the most reliable and has a mutual hate - hate relationship with Andrea. Thankfully we were able to replace Andrea's computer a few weeks ago, but we have so much that has been happening that we want to share with you so please be patient with us as we try to find the time to get everything uploaded and written out. In the meantime, enjoy this slideshow from Andrea's recent trip to Washington DC to visit her oldest sister for a week. :)

Ha sido MUCHO tiempo desde el ultimo blog! Disculpen. Un poco después de mudarnos a nuestra propia casa como una pareja casada, la computadora de Andrea se murió.... lastimademente con todas nuestras fotos. Pudimos rescatar la información y las fotos pero ha sido un proceso con mucha paciencia. Damos gracias que tenemos la computadora de Orlando pero no es la mas fiable y tiene una relación mutua de odio-odio con Andrea. Damos gracias que pudimos reemplazar la computadora de Andrea hace algunas semanas, pero tenemos tanto que ha pasado y para compartir con ustedes entonces por favor tengan paciencia con nosotros mientras que buscamos el tiempo para cargar y escribir todo. Mientras, disfrutan este slideshow de un viaje reciente que tuvo Andrea a Washington DC para visitar a su hermana mayor por una semana.
