Puppies!! / ¡¡Cachorros!!

On October 13th, our German Shepherd, Jamaica, had her puppies! Orlando wanted to breed her and Andrea wasn't too excited about the idea so we compromised and said he could breed her once. The first time we bred her back in January she had a psychological pregnancy. Yes, she even fooled the vet! But we're most certain she loved getting spoiled. :) We decided to give in one more shot the next time she went in heat. Well, this time we tried a different male dog and it was a friend of the family so we just dropped her off at his farm for about a week. The only thing is nobody could confirm for us if they had mated or not, and we were all pretty sure nothing happened. So we waited and were skeptical because of what happened the first time. Lo and behold, she was! We were pretty certain as it got closer, but not expecting it the day that it happened. Andrea was home alone and had checked Jamaica several times and was pretty sure it was going to be "the day" but was thinking it would happen at night. Orlando came home from the University around 3 pm and Andrea was in the living room working on the computer. When Orlando went back into the kitchen to get lunch he peeked in our room and Jamaica was cleaning up the first pup! The whole process lasted about 5 hours. There are 3 males and 3 females, all as cute as can be! We have homes for 3 of them, and our vet has 3 people interested in buying. Hopefully we can find good homes for all 6 puppies before our US trip in December.

El 13 de octubre nuestro pastor alemán, Jamaica, tuvo sus cachorros! Orlando quería cruzarla pero Andrea no estaba muy animada con la idea entonces hicimos un compromiso y decidimos cruzarla una vez. La primera vez fue en enero y tuvo un embarazo psicológico. Sí, hasta engañó al veterinario! Pero estamos seguros que ella disfruto ser la mimada. :) Decidimos dar un intento más cuando entro en celo otra vez. Esta vez escogimos un macho diferente y era de un amigo de la familia entonces la dejábamos en su finca por como una semana. La única cosa es que nadie podia confirmar si montaron o no, y todos estábamos muy seguros que nada pasó. Entonces esperamos pero estábamos muy escépticos por lo que pasó la ultima vez. Pero sí estaba embarazada! Pero no estábamos pensando que iba a pasar el día que fue. Andrea estaba sola en la casa y ha revisado Jamaica varias veces y estaba mas o menos segura que iba a ser el día pero estaba pensando más noche. Orlando llego de la universidad como a las 3 pm y Andrea estaba en la sala trabajando con la computadora. Orlando fue a la cocina para buscar almuerzo y miró a dentro de nuestro cuarto y encontró Jamaica limpiando el primer cachorro! Todo el proceso delato como 5 horas. Son 3 hembras y 3 machos, todos tan precioso como que pueden ser! Tenemos hogares para 3 de ellos, y nuestro veterinario tiene 3 personas interesados en comprar. Esperamos que podamos encontrar buenos hogares para los 6 antes de nuestro viaje a los EE.UU. en diciembre.

Winner, winner, winner!! / ¡Ganadores!

The company Marfil here in Nicaragua makes laundry soap and they have been having a promotion with golden coins. If you find a golden coin in your bar of laundry soap, you win a TV... a little like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Well, imagine that, we were the lucky winners! We didn't know anything about the promotion and Orlando just happened to see a thin golden line in the soap one day as he was brushing his teeth. He remembered that years ago they had such a promotion as well, so he started digging and pulled out a golden coin! He went all over and called a lot of different numbers to figure out what to do. It was really quite simple, they just needed his information and we would get a TV. A few weeks went by with them saying it would be delivered next week.... next week... next week. And finally just the other day they called us and were coming. We didn't really know what to expect but here came the big flatbed truck all staged to give away these TVs. After all the official paperwork was done, Orlando (Kari was hiding in the house, and Andrea went to go make a copy of Orlando's cedula) had to climb up on the big truck and get his picture taken several times. Then they brought it into the house and wanted a picture with the family (Kari hid in her room, and Andrea had to be in the picture). The thing is we were expecting a small TV of not great value because it was free after all. But no, we got a big 32" flatscreen Samsung TV. Pretty crazy. Afterwards, we were sitting there slightly baffled by all of this and realizing how blessed we have been here in Nicaragua. We live at about middle class by Nicaragua standards, but almost all the furniture or big appliances we have in our house were either gifted to us, lent to us, or bought mostly with money that was gifted to us (i.e. wedding or birthday). It is incredible to reflect on how God has provided for us. Yes, to some we have a few luxuries but we can almost always say that we didn't go out seeking or buying such luxuries. And it helps us to remember to be more giving to others (all in it's context of course because sometimes helping does hurt). Just yesterday we all got to sit and enjoy our new TV. It was a dreary, rainy day and for once we were all home at the same time. We had a movie we had been wanting to watch together so we got all cozy with hot chocolate and put the movie on.

La empresa Marfil aquí en Nicaragua hace jabon para lavar ropa y tienen una promoción de monedas dorados. Si encuentras una moneda dorada en tu jabon, ganas un TV... un poco como Charlie y La Fabrica de Chocolate. Bueno, imagina esto, fuimos ganadores! No sabíamos nada de la promoción pero un día cuando Orlando estaba lavando sus dientes miró una fila dorado en el jabon. Él recordó de una promoción así hace años y empezó a quitarlo. Él fue a muchos lugares y llamó muchos números para saber que teníamos que hacer. Fue muy sencillo, solo darles sus datos y nos entregan un TV. Pasaron algunas semanas que nos dijeron que lo iban a entregar, y al final vinieron el otro día. No sabíamos que pensar pero llegaron con un gran camión. Después de firmar todas las papeles, Orlando (Kari estaba escondiendo en la casa, y Andrea se fue para hacer una copia de la cédula de Orlando) subió al camión y tomaron un montón de fotos. Después la trajeron a la casa y tomaron fotos con la familia (Kari se escondió en su cuarto pero Andrea tenia que salir en la foto). La cosa es que pensábamos que seria un TV pequeña de no muy buena calidad porque era gratis. Pero no, recibimos un TV 32 pulgadas, pantalla plana, marca Samsung. Que locura! Después estábamos allí pensando en cuan grande es el TV y nos dimos cuenta que casi todo los muebles o cosas grandes que tenemos en la casa fueron regalados o prestados o comprado con dinero que fue regalado (boda o cumpleaños). Es increíble pensar en cuanto Dios nos ha proveído. Si en algo tenemos algunos lujos casi siempre podemos decir que no fuimos a buscar o comprarlo. Y nos ayuda a recordar a dar más a otras personas (claro que todo en su contexto porque a veces dar puede dañar). Ayer tuvimos la oportunidad de sentarnos y disfrutar nuestro TV nuevo. Era un día de lluvia y por la primera vez todos estábamos en casa al mismo tiempo. Teníamos una película que queríamos ver juntos entonces nos acomodamos y tomamos chocolate mientras miramos la película. 

Caleb Aarón

Our friends, Rey and Ana Yanzy, were just blessed with their first baby. They were hopeful for a girl, but God saw it fitting to give them a boy. Caleb Aarón was born on September 29, 2012. They are excited and in love with their little man. We went to visit them the day after he was born and he is quite the tiny baby. We took them a basket of some basic goods and Andrea made some cute booties for Caleb. (photos below)

Nuestros amigos, Rey y Ana Yanzy, recién fueron bendecidos con su primer hijo. Tenían esperanzas de que fuera niña, pero Dios les dio un varón. Caleb Aarón nació el 29 del septiembre del año 2012. Están muy emocionados y enamorados con su varoncito. Fuimos a visitarles el día después que nació y es muy chiquito. Les llevamos una canasta básica y Andrea hizo algunos zapatitos para Caleb.

Improvising / Improvisando

The Compassion project at our church celebrated their 4th anniversary at the end of September. Our dance kids had been asking us to learn a particular dance for this event, but they had also told us the event was in November. So you can imagine our surprise when we were surprised 10 days before the event that we needed to teach them a dance we had yet to learn ourselves! They are a great group of kids and helped us put it all together, which was probably a great learning experience for them.

In the end they ended up performing, Arrebato by Nancy Amancio. They were very nervous as they hadn't had a lot of time to practice it and two either didn't show or backed out at the last minute. It was ok because those two hadn't really practiced but it was a very calculated choreography that needed the right number of people. We thought that we were going to be able to fill in for them as we have on occasion in the past, but someone from Compassion came and it was to only be the kids. Alas, they did a great job for what they could. There were some obvious communication errors during the performance, but some told us that it was the best choreography they have seen yet. We hope to be more prepared in the future, but are still proud of our kids for getting over their nerves and giving their best shot. We are currently working on a drama for dental hygiene... dancing mouths and toothbrushes anyone? :)

El proyecto de Compassion en nuestra iglesia celebró su 4to aniversario al final de septiembre. Nuestro grupo de danza nos estaba pidiendo aprender una danza particular para este evento, pero también nos habian dicho que el evento estaba programado para noviembre. Entonces pueden imaginar nuestra sorpresa cuando supimos 10 días antes del evento que teníamos que enseñarles una danza que aún no hemos aprendido nosotros mismos! Son un grupo increíble de niños y nos ayudaron a finalizarla, la cual fue un gran experiencia para aprender para ellos.

Al final, hicieron una coreografía de Arrebato de Nancy Amancio. Estaban muy nerviosos porque no tuvieron mucho tiempo para practicar y dos no salieron en el ultimo momento. Estuvo bien porque ellos dos realmente no habian practicado pero es una coreografía que necesita un numero specifico. Pensabamos que ibamos a salir con ellos como hemos hecho a veces en el pasado, pero alguien de Compassion vino y solo pudieron salir los niños. Ni modo, hicieron un buen trabajo con lo que pudieron. Habia algunos fallas de communicación muy obvias durante la presentación, pero algunos nos dijeron que fue la mejor coreografiá que han visto. Esperamos estar más preparados en el futuro, pero estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros niños por conquistar sus nervios y dar su mejor esfuerzo. Actualmente, estamos haciendo un drama de higiene dental.... bocas y cepillos de dientes bailando? :)

USA bound

We recently applied for Orlando's visitor (tourist) visa in hopes of taking a trip to the US in December. We weren't planning on really going to the US until our planned move sometime next year, due to expenses and visas, etc. But it was casually mentioned of seeing if he could go with Andrea to the US in December. We thought and prayed about it and felt a peace to move forward. Neither one of us were looking forward to spending en extended period of time apart, especially our first anniversary! Our goal for August was to do the visa application, and hopefully get the visa. Well, we got started in August but finally had his application submitted the end of September. He had his interview on October 3rd at the US Embassy and they approved him. Even though we had to wait for hours at the Embassy, the interview was over within a few minutes. We received his passport with the visa in it a few days later. We were initially disappointed that they only approved him for 3 months (Andrea thought the minimum was 6 months, but guess not?) but we are ever so thankful that he has a visa and will be traveling to the US in December.

This is a big deal!
It will be the first time...
.... that he will meet Andrea's family (has only ever met her parents)
.... in an airplane
.... with snow
.... of really feeling COLD (he says he likes the cold, but he has never experienced Idaho/Colorado-in-the-winter-cold)
.... for many foods
.... of full immersion in English, and so much more.

We are still looking into our travel plans but will most likely spend 2 weeks in Idaho and 1 week in Colorado. We can't go more than 3 weeks because Orlando will already be missing 1 week of school with that. For our time in Idaho we are really feeling that it needs to be focused on family, but there are also sooo many people we want to see. Praying that the Lord leads us in all of this planning.

Recientemente aplicamos por la visa turística de Orlando con esperanzas de un viaje en diciembre. No estabamos planeando a ir a los estados unidos hasta mudarnos en el año que viene, por el costo y visas, etc. Pero fue mencionado casualmente el ver si él podria ir con Andrea a los EE.UU. en diciembre. Pensamos y oramos sobre esto y sentimos un paz para seguir. Ninguno de nosotros queremos estar separados por mucho tiempo, ¡especialmente por nuestro primero aniversario! Nuestra meta de agosto era hacer toda la aplicacion de la visa y obtener la visa. Bueno, empezamos en agosto pero entregamos la aplicacion al final de septiembre. Él tenia su entrevista el 3 del octubre en la embajada de los EE.UU.  y fue aprobado. Aunque tuvimos que esperar horas en la embajada, la entrevista solo fue algunos minutos. Recibimos su pasaporte con la visa algunos días después. Al principio estabamos un poco decepcionados que solo lo aprobaron por 3 meses (Andrea pensó que el mínimo era 6 meses, pero parece que no?) pero estamos muy agradecidos que él tiene una visa y va a viajar a los estados unidos en diciembre. 

Eso es grande!
Sería la primera vez....
.... que va a conocer la familia de Andrea (solo ha conocido sus padres)
.... en un avion
.... con nieve
.... de sentir realmente FRIO (él dice que le gusta el frio, pero nunca ha experimentado un invierno en Idaho o Colorado)
.... de probar muchas comidas
.... de inmersión en íngles, y mucho más.

Todavia estamos buscando boletas y haciendo nuestros planes de viaje pero lo mas probable es que pasemos 2 semanas en Idaho y 1 semana en Colorado. No podemos quedarnos mas de 3 semanas porque ya con esto Orlando va a perder una semana de la universidad. Por nuestro tiempo en Idaho, sentimos que necesitamos enfocar en tiempo con familia, pero hay tantas personas que queremos ver. Estamos orando que el Señor nos guia en todos los planes.
