Giving Thanks / Dando Gracias

This past week we celebrated the US holiday of Thanksgiving. This was Orlando's 2nd ever Thanksgiving and he was looking forward to it. We have been blessed with a small community of fellow missionaries here in Nicaragua so we all got together to celebrate, everyone pitching in. Larry made the turkey and stuffing, The Gass family made rice with corn and green beans, Kari made her amazing mashed potatoes, Rachel made pumpkin pie and cheesecake, Andrea made Pineapple pie, and Orlando and Freddy brought the bread. It was quite a feast and we finished off the evening with a game of Spoons. (photos below)

La semana pasada celebramos un día de festival de los estados, el Día de Acción de Gracias. Este era el 2do día de acción de gracias que Orlando ha experimentado y él estaba muy emocionado. Hemos sido bendecidos con una communidad pequeña de otros misioneros aquí en Nicaragua entonces lo celebramos juntos, cada uno haciendo su parte. Larry hizo el pavo y el relleno, La familia Gass hizo arroz con maiz y frijoles verdes, Kari hizo su increible puree de papa, Rachel hizo una torta de ayote y un queque de queso, Andrea hizo una torta de piña, y Orlando y Freddy traeron el pan. Fue un gran banquete y terminamos la noche con un partido de Cucharas.

Discipleship / Discipulado

We have recently become friends with a young man, Hebert, from Granada. He is the nephew of one of the ladies Andrea does beads with. One afternoon while we were visiting Ana, Hebert stopped by and we hit it off. After his father passed away about a year ago, he decided to get serious about God. He started attending church with a friend and found out about their discipleship academy. He felt that no matter what he was going to do in life, if he was going to honestly call himself a Christian, he should learn all that he could... so he enrolled. A couple of weeks ago, he graduated from the first level of their Discipleship Academy and we had the honor of being his guests. We look forward to seeing Hebert grow more and more as he seeks the Lord and are thankful for his friendship. (photos below)

Recientemente, hemos conocido a un joven de Granada, se llama Hebert. Él es el sobrino de una de las mujeres que trabaja con Andrea con las piedras. Una tarde cuando estabamos visitando a Ana, Hebert pasó y nos cayo bien. Después que su papá se murio hace casí un año, Hebert decidio estar más serio en su busqueda de Dios. Él empezo asistir a una iglesia con una amiga y pronto supó de su academia de discipulado. Él sentía que no importaba lo que hiciera con la vida, si iba a decir ser cristiano, debia de aprender todo lo que pudiera... entonces se matriculó. Hace algunas semanas, la promocionó del primer nivel de su academia de discipulado y tuvimos el honor de ser sus invitados. Estamos felices de ver a Hebert creciendo más y más y damos gracias por su amistad.

Happy Birthday Ofelia! / ¡Feliz Cumple Ofelia!

So this is a little delayed, but on October 25th we celebrated Ofelia's (Orlando's sister) 19th birthday! Andrea made her a banana cake with chocolate frosting and a coloring book. Birthdays aren't celebrated a lot here in Nicaragua, but Andrea always thinks one should feel special on their birthday so a little something never hurts, right?

Bueno, esto es un poco dilatado, pero el 25 de octubre celebramos el cumpleaños de Ofelia (la hermana de Orlando). ¡Ella cumplio 19 años! Andrea hizo un queque de banano con chocolate y un libro para pintar. los cumpleaños no son muy celebrados aquí en Nicaragua, pero Andrea siempre cree que uno debe de sentirse especial en su cumpleaños. :)

Running / Corriendo

It is hard to believe that more than a month has gone by. We are quite busy these days but sometimes it feels like there is nothing going on to tell about. In mid-October Andrea took a 'mandatory vacation' to Costa Rica with her friend Kari so they could renew their visas. It was a nice relaxing time and they even made it to the beach one day despite rainy weather. Here are some photos from her trip.

Es difícil creer que más que un mes ha pasado. Estamos muy ocupados en estes días pero a veces siente que no hay nada para contar. En medio de octubre Andrea tenia una vacación requirido a Costa Rica con su amiga Kari para renovar sus visas. Era un tiempo relajado y fueron al mar un día aunque estaba lloviendo. Aquí están algunas fotos de su viaje.

We are running around trying to get details for the wedding finalized. It is hard to believe it is only 47 days away!  Here is a photo of our German Shepherd, Jamaica. She thinks she's the queen of the house. But who can blame her? Andrea counted the other day how many injections she has had in her short life of only 10 months... 140! The poor girl! She has been quite sick but she is our survivor!

Estamos corriendo para finalizar las detalles para la boda. Es difícil creer que solamente 47 días más! Aquí es una foto de nuestra pastor aleman, Jamaica. Ella cree que ella es la reina de la casa. Pero quien la puede culpar? El otro día Andrea conto cuantos inyeciones Jamaica ha recibido en su vida de solo 10 meses.... 140! La pobrecita! Ella ha estado muy enferma pero es nuestra sobreviviente!

Breaking Free / Escapando a la Libertad

Andrea has been doing a girls Bible Study (Breaking Free by Beth Moore) with some other female missionaries here. The other week we were learning about how past hurts in our lives can become strongholds. Either we nurse them along so they never heal or we put a quick bandaid on it and swear to never let anyone hurt us like that again. Not only does this never fix our hurts but it isolates us as we prohibit love from entering and from exiting. What God really desires is for us to surrender these hurts to him so they won't hold us captive and we can live in His freedom. The other morning while Andrea was doing the 'homework' for the day, God touched her heart visually with this image. Christ was sent to bind up the brokenhearted. This means taking away the bandaids, the rusty old boards nailed over our wounds and allowing Him to bandage them with clean bandages that can breath and provide healing while still letting love in and letting love out. She felt moved to illustrate this and here's what the result was. (photo below)

Andrea esta haciendo un estudio biblico (Escapar a la Libertad de Beth Moore) con algunas otras misioneras aquí. La otra semana estuvimos aprendiendo como las heridas pasadas pueden convertirse en fortaleza enemiga en nuestras vidas. Las cuidamos tanto que nunca se curan o ponemos una cura rapido y prometemos que nadie nos va a lastimar así otra vez. Esto no solamente no repara las heridas sino que nos isolata porque le prohibimos al amor entrar o salir. Lo que Dios desea para nosotros es que rindamos estas heridas a Él para que no nos tengan cautivos y podamos vivir en Su libertad. El otro día cuando Andrea estaba haciendo su 'tarea' por el día, Dios toco su corazón visualmente con esta imagen. Cristo fue enviado para vendar a los quebrantados de corazón. Esto significa quitar las curas, la madera vieja y oxidada sobre nuestras heridas y permitiendole vendarlas con vendajes limpios con los que pueden respirar y proveer sanidad mientras que el amor puede entrar y salir. Ella se sentía motivada para ilustrar esto y este es el resultado.

Bible March / Marcha de la Biblia

This past Sunday, September 25th, we had the Bible March celebrating the 442nd Anniversary of the Bible translated into Spanish. Many of the churches participate and make banners, dress up, make floats and we walk through the streets praying at various places as a united Body of Christ, then we end at a park for a joint worship service. This year as we were walking through Diriamba celebrating this event, I couldn't help but rejoice for many reasons.... ONE, because the Bible being translated into Spanish is a huge gift to God's people and has greatly aided in reaching every nation and tongue for His kingdom for the past 442 years. TWO, because we have the freedom here in Nicaragua to walk through the streets without worry celebrating God's Word, while many of our brothers and sisters in Christ across the world have to hide and risk their lives even just to read one page of the Bible. THREE, at the unity that this event brings to have churches of varying denominations join together. It brings joy to my heart knowing that they celebrate God's Word being translated into their native tongue, truly a gift to celebrate! (photos below)

El domingo pasado, el 25 de septiembre, tuvimos la marcha de la Biblia celebrando el 442 aniversario de la traduccion de la Biblia al español. Muchas iglesia participaron: haciendo banderas, vestiendose en ropa de los tiempos biblicos, haciendo carrozas y caminamos en las calles orando en varios lugares como un cuerpo de Cristo unido, y terminamos en un parque para un culto unido. Este año cuando estabamos caminando por Diriamba celebrando este evento, no podia dejar de regocijarme por algunas razones... UNO, porque la traduccion de la Biblia al español es un gran regalo al pueblo de Dios y ha ayudado mucho en predicar a todas las naciones y lenguas por la gloria del reino de Dios por los ultimos 442 años. DOS, porque aqui en Nicaragua tenemos la libertad de caminar por las calles, sin preocuparnos, celebrando La Palabra de Dios, mientras que muchos de nuestros hermanos en Cristo en otras partes del mundo tienen que esconderse y ariesquan sus vidas solo para ver una pagina de la Biblia. Tres, que grande es la unidad que este evento trae a las iglesias de varias denominaciones. Trae gozo a mi corazón sabiendo que celebramos la traduccion de La Palabra de Dios en su lengua nativa, un verdadero regalo para celebrar!

Larry's Party / Celebración de Larry

Here we share with you some photos from the celebration of our friend, Larry, who is happy to have completed one year here in Nicaragua and he wanted to share it with some friends. Larry is a missionary who is helping in some of the poorer barrios of Nicaragua, he characterized by his friendliness and his willingness to help the people. We went to his house to share hamburgers and hotdogs (typical food for celebrations in the US) and watch a movie. It was a fun night and we are grateful to have Larry here in Nicaragua with us. We wish many more years for Larry here in Nicaragua. Congratulations, Larry! (photos below)

Aquí les traemos unas fotos de la celebración de nuestro amigo Larry quien está feliz de cumplir un año de vivir en Nicaragua y quizo compartir eso con algunos amigos. Larry es un misionero que está ayudando a algunos barrios pobres de Nicaragua, él se caracteriza mucho por su amabilidad y su buena voluntad de ayudar a las personas. Fuimos a su casa para compartir hamburguesas y hotdogs (comida tipica de celebraciónes en los estados unidos) y miramos una pelicula. Fue una noche divertido y estamos agradables a tener Larry aquí en Nicaragua con nosotros. Deseamos muchos años más por Larry en Nicaragua. ¡Felicidades Larry!

Catarina

We took a trip to Catarina last week to see if we could find flowers for the wedding cheaper there. Catarina is known for their plants and flowers. Andrea has always passed by in car but never stopped along the highway to browse through the thousands of plants being sold. We took the bus and got off on the highway to walk along looking at the flowers and asking about prices. It turns out they don't sell cut flowers, only the plants. Andrea wanted to take advantage of the trip (she loves plants) and the cheap prices. After strolling along, we walked up to the lookout over Laguna Apoyo. Orlando had never been up to the lookout before. You can see Volcano Mombacho to the left, and beyond Laguna Apoyo you can see Granada and Lake Nicaragua, including some of the islands in Lake Nicaragua on a clear day. It is quite beautiful! After spending some time at the lookout we walked back down so Andrea could buy her plants. She settled on a basil plant and Azalea with beautiful red flowers! We caught the bus back and had a great outing! (photos below)

Fuimos a Catarina la semana pasada para ver si podiamos encontrar flores más baratas para la boda. Catarina es conocido por sus plantas y flores. Andrea siempre ha pasado en carro pero nunca paró en la carretera para ver las miles de plantas que venden allí. Fuimos en bus y nos bajamos en la carretera para caminar mirando las flores y preguntando de los precios. Encontramos que no venden flores cortadas, solamente las plantas. Andrea queria aprovechar el viaje (le encantan las plantas) y los precios baratos. Después de pasiar un tiempo, fuimos al mirador de Catarina donde se puede ver Laguna Apoyo. Orlando nunca habia ido al mirador antes. De allí puede verse el Volcan Mombacho a la izquierda, y a distancia detrás de la Laguna Apoyo se puede ver Granada y el Lago Nicaragua, incluyendo algunas de las islas en el Lago Nicaragua si hay un buen clima. Es tan maravilloso! Después de pasar un buen tiempo en el mirador regresamos para que Andrea pudiera comprar sus plantas. Ella escogió una planta de albahaca y una azalea roja! Tomamos el bus para regresar y fue un gran paseo!
