Christmas 2013 / Navidad 2013

We are still figuring out what we do for Christmas and even what holidays we are choosing to celebrate as a family. Andrea always grew up celebrating Christmas with her family, and Orlando did when he was little. However, the Christian church here in Nicaragua generally does not celebrate Christmas for various reasons. We on the other hand are choosing to celebrate it but as a time of reflexion of the great gift of our Lord Jesus being sent to us. We did a Jesse Tree this year and enjoyed reading the stories leading up to Christ's birth and also reflecting on the season. We also decided to so a small gift exchange between us and Kari - keeping it simple, but also finding joy in being able to give.

Andrea's mom always makes homemade Clam Chowder on Christmas Eve and has the whole family over. We were invited by some of our neighbors for a grill out and Andrea made some chowder to share with them. First time making it herself and it turned out quite tasty - aside from not being able to find clams in Nicaragua or Costa Rica so it was just a fancy potato chowder. Our grill out was typical for Nica life and we didn't start cooking until 10pm. Nicaraguans stay up until midnight and then light off fireworks and open presents (if they decide to do presents, which most Christians don't).

Christmas morning, Andrea made some carmel cinnamon rolls and we opened our presents. It is always fun thinking of what the other person might like and then getting to watch them open in. :) Kari's family  tradition is that she makes a family recipe called "Chicken and Noodles" with her dad on Christmas day. So she made her noodles and we enjoyed Chicken and Noodles for lunch. Leading up to Christmas we also made some delicious sugar cookies and decorated them, as well as some alfajores with chocolate in the middle and rolled either in crushed candy cane or crushed peanuts.

Costa Rica

In the middle of our crazy month of December, Kari and Andrea took a quick trip down to Costa Rica. Andrea didn't have to leave until January 2nd, and Kari was only up for a renewal but with looking at our schedules it was better if we just went together now. We stayed in Liberia like usual and took our usual day trip to the beach - Playa Tamarindo this time. Some highlights of our trip were: finding Christian books in Spanish at MaxiPali (sort of like a mini WalMart), finding a delicious Mexican Taqueria to eat at, Papa John's Pizza, the quaint town of Tamarind, and a delicious cheeseburger on the beach. Other than that our time consisted of visiting grocery stores (not sure why, but always on our list as one of our favorite places to visit/shop), eating bad chinese food, sitting by the pool, and Andrea getting poo'd on by a bird 3 TIMES while eating ice cream in the park. See you in another 6 months, Costa Rica! Fun times always await us! (Photos below Spanish)

(Fotos abajo)

Luis & Ericka's Wedding / La Boda de Luis y Ericka

On December 15th we celebrated with two of our friends at their wedding. Luis was president of the youth when Orlando served as vice president three years ago. It was a beautiful ceremony and although it started to rain at the beginning of the reception, it cleared up quickly and we were blessed with a rainbow arching over the church. Best wishes Luis and Ericka on this new chapter of your lives together. Always seek the Lord first, and He will guide your plans.  (Photos below Spanish)

(Fotos abajo)

Perla

At the beginning of December we got to catch up with Perla. She is one of the girls we started working with in Masaya and then helped bring her to Diriamba. She has now spent the past 3 years in a missionary training program with Castillo del Rey (King's Castle) in association with the Assemblies of God. Her first year was spent in El Salvador, her second year here working in Nicaragua and her third year in Dominican Republic. We were anxious to see her and hear about her past year of ministry and also her future plans and dreams. We have seen a lot of growth in Perla over the past few years and are currently looking at how she can continue to work with Str8way. Way to go Perla, we are proud of you!

Andrea first met Heather 7 years ago on a Str8way trip to Alaska. Over the past few years Heather has made several trips to Nicaragua and just recently was down here for 6 months working in Granada. Coming up on her last week in Nicaragua before heading back to freezing temps in the US, she wanted one last beach trip. Since we hadn't been to the beach in over a year we kindly obliged. ;) So on Friday we packed up and headed to San Juan del Sur after Orlando worked half a day at the cyber. We took a bus to Jinotepe, then another bus to Rivas, and yet another bus to San Juan del Sur. We easily found our hotel (Hotel Maracuya - "hotel quality at hostel prices") and were quite pleased. The weekend consisted of lots of time at the beach - just a short walk from the hotel - good food, and great company. The hotel even had a surfboard that was available to guests so Orlando got to give surfing a try. Well, sort of. There weren't really any waves big enough but he perfected his technique of waiting for the perfect wave. We also had a blast with our different sand creations-- Day 1 was a palm tree on the beach complete with coconuts and a sun; Day 2 was a beach umbrella and soccer ball on the beach. A lot of fun (maybe too much fun) was had posing with our sand creations. And then on Sunday after spending the morning at the beach we showered, packed up and headed back to reality. We hope to escape to San Juan del Sur again in the near future. It was just what we had been needing and we all came back refreshed although slightly exhausted physically. This trip was also Orlando's first trip to San Juan del Sur. Andrea loves discovering new parts of Nicaragua with him! (Photos below Spanish)

(Fotos abajo)

Giving Thanks / Dando Gracias

This year we celebrate Thanksgiving on Saturday due to Orlando having to work on Thursday. We invited several friend over and it was a great time had by all. We were reminded (thanks to Kari) of the story in the Bible about the Wedding Banquet. Where the man invites his friends to the wedding banquet but at the last minute they all have excuses not to attend. So he sent the servants out into the streets and tells them to bring whoever they can find because his table will be full. Well we had invited some close friends but at the end several did not show up. Our table was still full though as we had some family and friends stop by and we invited them to stay. It wasn't exactly as we had planned but it was what God had planned and we enjoyed sharing this time with them all.

Since we couldn't get a turkey easily here (requires trip to Managua and a PriceSmart membership) we roasted 3 whole chickens! It was Andrea's first time cooking any full-size bird but it was a success. We enjoyed chicken, cornbread stuffing (also a first!), mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and broccoli. Of course, we also did the traditional pre-dinner food of a veggie tray and crackers with cheese spread. To finish off the meal we had apple pie and pumpkin cheesecake pie (both huge successes, but forgot to take a picture). (Photos below Spanish)

---------------------------

(Fotos abajo)
