We recently applied for Orlando's visitor (tourist) visa in hopes of taking a trip to the US in December. We weren't planning on really going to the US until our planned move sometime next year, due to expenses and visas, etc. But it was casually mentioned of seeing if he could go with Andrea to the US in December. We thought and prayed about it and felt a peace to move forward. Neither one of us were looking forward to spending en extended period of time apart, especially our first anniversary! Our goal for August was to do the visa application, and hopefully get the visa. Well, we got started in August but finally had his application submitted the end of September. He had his interview on October 3rd at the US Embassy and they approved him. Even though we had to wait for hours at the Embassy, the interview was over within a few minutes. We received his passport with the visa in it a few days later. We were initially disappointed that they only approved him for 3 months (Andrea thought the minimum was 6 months, but guess not?) but we are ever so thankful that he has a visa and will be traveling to the US in December.
This is a big deal!
It will be the first time...
.... that he will meet Andrea's family (has only ever met her parents)
.... in an airplane
.... with snow
.... of really feeling COLD (he says he likes the cold, but he has never experienced Idaho/Colorado-in-the-winter-cold)
.... for many foods
.... of full immersion in English, and so much more.
We are still looking into our travel plans but will most likely spend 2 weeks in Idaho and 1 week in Colorado. We can't go more than 3 weeks because Orlando will already be missing 1 week of school with that. For our time in Idaho we are really feeling that it needs to be focused on family, but there are also sooo many people we want to see. Praying that the Lord leads us in all of this planning.

Sowing in Fertile Soil / Sembrando en Tierra Fértil
Our church here in Nicaragua used to be recipients of Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. We've heard varying stories as to why we no longer receive the boxes, but regardless of the reason, our church has decided to do their own version. There are over 100 children that attend Sunday School at our church, many of which aren't from Christian families but simply get sent by their parents. Our church decided that they want each of these children to be sponsored to receive a gift at Christmas. So this past Sunday, we had a special service at church to kick off the sponsorship. They have been carefully collecting data of each of the children (age, name, address, parents names, etc) and taking their photos so that we can know who we are sponsoring and be praying specifically for our child. It was done very official, with our signatures as well as the director of Sunday School and the Pastor's signatures.
In preparation of this event, we were asked along with Orlando's mom to do the decorations. This service was a "Siembra"; the Spanish word "sembrar" means to sow or plant, so we are sowing into the lives of these children. Based on the fact that it was a Siembra we wanted to decorate accordingly. They also mentioned the theme of the multiplication of the bread and fish (Matthew14:13-20). Orlando's mom is becoming quite the pro at making piñatas so she made some baskets with bread and fish in them. Andrea got the idea of having 4 banners in the church. One with a farmer sowing seed with a little boy in a field, and then one with a wheat field ready for harvest. Another with a fisherman throwing a net into the sea with a little boy, and then a fisherman pulling in a net full of fish.
The banners turned out to be more work than anticipated and included staying up late many nights and working all day... but they were more than worth it. We were all quite pleased with the finished product and excited to bless the church with these decorations. During the service Orlando was called up to explain the banners a little and he did a marvelous job. He started with the fisherman and how first you have to cast out the net, kind of like sharing the gospel. But you can't pull it in right away, you have to wait patiently until it is ready and then you can pull in the full net. It's not always an immediate return. Then he explained the farmer and just like the earth is fertile soil for the seeds to be sown in, children are also like fertile soil ready to be sown into. And when we sow into the life of a child, we get to see the harvest in their youth.

Facing the Difficult / Enfrentando lo Difícil
Our friend Kari wrote a great blog post last week about how We're Not Home Yet. She wrote it so well and expressed what we were having trouble putting into words ourself that we are simply mentioning it here and linking to it, we encourage you to check it out.
In thinking about how we're not home yet, it makes a current family situation very difficult for us. Back in February, Orlando's cousin was diagnosed with cancer. She was having some issues and went in to get her colon checked and the doctor told her she had cancer and wasn't allowing her to leave the hospital. It turns out that there were signs of it throughout the years but that it was actually cancer and seriousness of it was not clearly communicated and because of that she never really followed up, just thinking she had a cyst. The family responded right away and we all went to see her. Even the Nicaraguan presidency got involved in her medical care because she is a famous folk singer here in Nicaragua. Everyone was geared up to fight.
A little over a month ago, we stopped by to see her while we were getting some things taken care of in Managua for the day. It was then that we learned it was terminal cancer. That was very hard news for us to receive, especially Orlando. As we sat on the bus waiting to leave Managua, the radio was playing some of her songs and it was just too much to take in. So we became even more consistent in calling and trying to visit.
She has been asking to see Orlando's sister, Ofelia, so just last week we took Ofelia to see her. It went about as well as it could go when a family with differing views gets together and tries to face a crisis like this. We found out that back in February the doctors had given her 6 1/2 months to live, she has made it past 7 1/2 months now. They are trying one final treatment of injected chemo and then wishing her a good life. There is nothing more that can be done or that her ragged body can take. We are all fighting for her and trying to encourage her, but unfortunately we don't know how much time is left. She has started returning to her old ways before she was sick, trying kill the pain. She vomits every time she eats or drinks or takes her meds. Her kidneys are failing.
This is where Kari's blog post comes into play, we're not home yet. You see, Orlando's cousin is not a believer. She knows the Bible. She's a good person. She knows Jesus loves her. But she doesn't know that Jesus loves her, she refuses the gospel. We have been told that she has tried all kinds of stuff to cure her from this cancer, such as placing stones in her hands to drinking potions. We know that she could receive her miracle if she believes in Jesus as her Savior. She has always allowed anyone to pray for her, but now we are told that while she allows it she tries to think of anything else possible to not hear the words they are saying. Andrea's prayer for her up to this point has been pleading for God to change her heart and asking on her behalf as Abraham pleaded on behalf of Lot (Genesis 18:16-33). Now we are praying that God will take away her heart of stone and give her a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26).
We're not home yet... She is a good person, but when it comes to eternity that just isn't enough. She knows the Bible, but when it comes to eternity it's not enough. There's still time left, how much we're not sure, but every second counts. How does one deal with losing a family member (Orlando is particularly close to this cousin) and accept that they are in a worse place than this earth. When someone passes away we try to comfort the family by telling them, "she/he is in a better place". That doesn't work this time, at least not yet. The gospel has been shared in so many ways, by so many people, so many different denominations, and she refuses. We keep praying fervently for her and on her behalf. But God has the final word.

Keeping Watch at Night / Haciendo Vigilancia
A recent addition to our schedule is going to stay at the farm once a week to help guard. Someone has to stay up all night to keep an eye on things and make sure no one comes in to steal the animals or other things. The animals are clearly the most important, but often times there are fence posts stolen or even beans right out of the field. Since Orlando was the only male in the house before we got married, it has left just his grandma, mom, and sister to take over this task of keeping watch at night. This has always been something that has weighed heavy on our hearts. At first we had talked with Orlando's brother to see if maybe we could go in together on paying a guard for the nights, but that never worked out. So we decided that at least Orlando would go down once a week to stay up all night and be able to give his family a good night's rest. With Orlando's schedule at the University being two full days (as opposed to 4 half days which it usually is) it allows him to go down and not have to worry about getting up and going to class the next day. When possible Andrea likes to accompany him and we make it a family affair. We also take down Jamaica and Kieko (Kari's dog) which are more than happy to play their role in guarding and sounding the alarm when something is astir. To pass the time, we watch movies, play games on the computer, share the Bible, listen to sermons, play games, oh and of course count the animals every so often until 4 am. Then we tuck ourselves in bed and usually fall asleep around 4:30 when the farmhand comes to milk the cows.
------------------------------------------

A New Ministry / Un Nuevo Ministerio
We are excited to share a new ministry opportunity that is becoming available to us. Ever since before we got married, we have both felt a desire to share our growth and what we were learning with other couples. To truly come alongside one another and do life together. One of the great things about Nicaraguan culture is it is very relational; one of the downfalls we have seen in the Nicaraguan church (more Andrea since she has something to compare it to) is lack of relation. It seems ironic that in the midst of a very relational culture, they often take the relationship aspect out of church.
We have been praying for the Lord to reveal HIS plan for a marriage ministry. It is something we personally crave since we are just starting out and trying to figure this all out, but it is also something we have seen desperately lacking in our church. Our pastor jokes that when he announces there will be a sermon on marriage or family, nobody shows up. So now he has stopped announcing and they are trapped if it happens to be a sermon on marriage or family. Sad but true. When we did our premarital counseling with our Nica pastor he shared with us that he had always wanted to do a marriage retreat in our church but had never been able to do it. After we had been married just a few months we felt a desire to attend something such as a marriage retreat and felt led to help our pastor make it possible. We approached him and told him we would like to help him accomplish a marriage retreat for the church, but we never heard anything since.
So as we have been continuing to pray and lay this desire for a married ministry of some sort before the Lord, we have been led to starting a Married Life Group. A few weeks ago we had our pastor, his wife and one-year-old daughter over for dinner. We were unsure how it was going to go but very hopeful. It was sadly the first time we have really personally interacted with our pastor and his family outside of church. We have found that we really like our pastor when you can get him on a more personal level. :) One of our hopes in having them over was to run past them the idea of a Marrieds Life Group. Our church has a "celula" or small/cell/life group for the youth but the idea has died out amongst the church as a whole. I think they used to do them but when you have church service 5 times a week it makes it difficult to add in something else. When we presented our idea for a Marrieds Life Group, they were very excited and supportive; and we were very excited by their response.
We know it seems a little crazy that a couple who barely has 7 months of marriage under their belt is going to be leading a marrieds life group. We feel the same way! But we have to be faithful and give it our best shot. Who knows what God can do through us. We are taking this month to intently pray about who to involve, and how to run the group. We want to keep it at no more than 5 couples and have already felt drawn to a few couples. We will see how the Lord leads and confirms, and we hope to get started the first part of September. We will be going around and visiting each family and personally inviting them. Our desire is that this vision may multiply within the church and other groups may form. During our times together we want to focus on 4 areas - worship, fellowship, study/reflection, prayer. The two biggies are fellowship and prayer. We want this group to be different. Often times when it is a church event it is run just like a church service, literally. You sing a few songs, someone reads a passage from the Bible, you take an offering, sing a few more songs, there is a sermon/reflection given, and prayer is interspersed between everything in there. It is really great.... sometimes. But sometimes you need to go deeper, you need to really pour into one another and connect. We hope this group can be different. We want to respect any rules our church may have on how "células" should be run, but we want to be personal, we want to discuss, we want to lift each other up in prayer, to encourage through the trials, that it can be a safe place for them to come and share. We realize that type of relationship takes time, but that is our desire and hope. We'll have to put ourselves out there and initiate which can also be scary, but it is more than worth it! We weren't meant to do this life alone. We can learn from one another and support one another.
--------------------------------------------

Mandatory Vacation
Every 6 months, Nicaragua law says Andrea has to leave the country for 3 days (due to having a tourist visa). This time Orlando got his first stamps in his new passport and got to go with us to Liberia, Costa Rica!!! Kari and Andrea usually don't do vacation too well (too expensive), but were determined to have a real vacation with Orlando. We saw a 3D movie, went to the beach, and even a National Park! Enjoy this Photo Album that highlights our trip! (it may take awhile for all of the photos to load, please be patient!)

The Past 3 Months... / Los Ultimos 3 Meses...
We've had a busy past few months but here's a quick rundown:
---> Andrea has been sick with everything from Strep Throat to Anemia to Food Poisoning to a Severe Stomach Infection.... she is thankfully healthy and strong right now!
---> We celebrated Mother's Day here in Nicaragua on May 30th. We enjoyed celebrating with Orlando's mom and Grandma. Andrea helped Ofelia paint a picture for her mom, Roxana was quite surprised. With the Compassion Project at our church, we taught a choreography in honor of the mothers.
---> We celebrated Children's Day with the Compassion Project at our church. We marched through the streets of Dolores (a neighboring town) with all of the Compassion Projects in Carazo (our department/state). Our kids dressed up to represent future judges, doctors, nurses, police, etc and we expressed our rights to Education, Health, Safe Recreation, etc. The parade led us to a stadium where the kids presented a choreography that we had taught them.

---> Orlando's mom, Roxana, celebrated her birthday at the beginning of June. We had a great time making her feel special. Orlando (with Andrea's guidance) made her a chocolate cake and we bought her a rose bush. She was overwhelmed with tears and gratitude as we surprised her in the morning.
---> We've moved! Our lease was up on our first little house and while we had hopes of extending it, our landlord needed her house back. After a roller coaster month of searching for a new house we finally found one a week before we needed to move. We will post more about our new humble abode later so you can get a good look at it. :)
¡Hemos mudado! :)
---> We were approved to start our dance ministry with the Compassion project at our church! We only have 5 members right now but hope to grow it to at least 10. The kids are very excited but are already seeing that it will be a lot of work and discipline. We hope to provide them with structure and a new way to express and grow in their faith.

---> Orlando's sweet Grandma celebrated her birthday at the beginning of July. Andrea had Ofelia over in the morning to help make her a Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Ofelia has taken a recent curiosity to cooking and it was fun to let her experience being the chef. We celebrated with cake and ice cream at the farm.
That sums up the last few months. We leave this week for a trip to Costa Rica so more updates when we get back!
