Nicaragua Earthquakes / Temblores en Nicaragua

You may have seen Nicaragua in the news lately as having had several earthquakes. Starting last Thursday, we have been experiencing several strong earthquakes (and a lot of little tremors) originating close to the capital city, Managua. We are currently on Extreme Red Alert. We do not live in Managua, but have definitely felt some of the stronger quakes and a few of the smaller tremors. (If you want to look it up on a map, we live in Diriamba which is located in the department of Carazo.) 

While this is concerning, it is unfortunately not too surprising as Managua has been the victim of severely destructive earthquakes occurring every 40-45 years for the past 130 years. The last earthquake that destroyed Managua was in 1972, which puts us in year 42… So unfortunately it doesn't seem like it is a question of "if" it will happen, but rather "when" it is going to happen. There have been thoughts that these recent earthquakes have reawakened the old fault line which caused the 1972 quake. It is also possible that it has activated the chain of 12 volcanoes that line the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. 

The majority of Orlando's family lives in Managua, as well as some good friends of ours. We are trying to convince the family to come stay with us (and at the farm) so that they are away from danger. Most are resistant to come, and unfortunately most Nicaraguans do not understand the history behind these earthquakes and that the next 'Big One' may be coming. We are ready and willing to receive friends and family whenever they come, hopefully sooner rather than later. 

Last night during a power outage, we sat on the front porch with the guitars and sang worship songs. Kari started singing "Blessed be Your Name" which seemed very fitting, especially as we sang: "Blessed be your name, on the road marked with suffering, though there is pain in the offering, Blessed be your name…" We do not know what the Lord has planned right now for Nicaragua, but we know we can trust Him. May His name be blessed and may we continue to seek him in how to navigate this road we are being led on...

Usted pudo haber visto Nicaragua en las noticias últimamente como haber tenido varios terremotos. A partir del jueves pasado, hemos estado experimentando varios terremotos fuertes (y un montón de pequeños temblores) se origina cerca de la ciudad capital, Managua. En estos momentos estamos en alerta roja extrema. No vivimos en Managua, pero definitivamente hemos sentido algunos de los terremotos más fuertes y algunos de los temblores pequeños. (Si quiere buscar en un mapa, vivimos en Diriamba, ubicado en el departamento de Carazo.) 

Si bien esto es preocupante, por desgracia, no es demasiado sorprendente, ya que Managua ha sido la víctima de terremotos gravemente destructivos ocurren cada 40 a 45 años durante los últimos 130 años. El último terremoto que destruyó Managua en 1972, lo que nos sitúa en el año 42 ... Así que por desgracia, no parece que se trata de una cuestión de "si" va a suceder, sino "cuándo" va a suceder. Ha habido pensamientos que estos terremotos recientes han reactivado la vieja línea de falla que provocó el terremoto de 1972. También es posible que se haya activado la cadena de 12 volcanes que bordean la costa del Pacífico de Nicaragua. 

La mayor parte de la familia de Orlando vive en Managua, y también algunos buenos amigos nuestros. Estamos tratando de convencer a la familia para quedarse con nosotros (y en la finca) de forma que se encuentran fuera de peligro. La mayoría son resistentes a venir, y por desgracia la mayoría de los nicaragüenses no entienden la historia detrás de estos terremotos y que el próximo 'Grande' podría estar llegando. Estamos listos y dispuestos a recibir a los amigos y la familia cuando vienen, ojalá más temprano que tarde. 

Ayer por la noche durante un apagón, nos sentamos en el porche con las guitarras y cantamos canciones de adoración. Kari comenzó a cantar "Bendito sea tu Nombre", que parecía muy apropiado, especialmente en lo que cantamos: "Bendito sea tu nombre, en el camino marcado por el sufrimiento, aunque hay dolor en la ofrenda, Bendito sea tu nombre ..." No sabemos lo que el Señor ha planeado ahora para Nicaragua, pero sabemos que podemos confiar en él. Que su nombre sea bendecido y que podamos continuar a buscarlo en la forma de navegar por este camino que estamos siendo guiados en … 

Por favor únase a nosotros en oración por Nicaragua ... 

• Que el pueblo actuará con prudencia en la búsqueda de la seguridad y estar preparado; mantener la calma pero estar alerta y listo 

• Las autoridades y las operaciones de rescate tendrían una buena comunicación para el bien de las personas 

• La gente se sienten atraídos por el Señor durante este tiempo buscándole como su única verdadera Salvación

Andrea's Birthday / El Cumpleaños de Andrea

On March 17th, Andrea turned 31. The day started out by running some errands and getting Kari's visa renewed. Around noon we headed to La Quinta Lupita (a local hotel) to enjoy their swimming pool and lunch. Kari and Orlando had wanted to take Andrea to Hertylandia (a local waterpark) but it was closed on Monday so they settled for the pool at the local hotel. Unfortunately the water wasn't the cleanest but we made the most out of it. Lunch was really good, especially the churrasco (beef with a garlic sauce). After we had our fill of sun and water, we headed back home. Orlando's mom and good family friend, Melba, surprised Andrea with a cake and gifts. The cake was sent from our church's Compassion Project staff. The power went out just before Orlando and Andrea were heading out for dinner, but we chanced it anyway. All of Diriamba was without power but as the restaurant we were going to was just slightly outside of town, they still had power. We were able to enjoy a romantic little dinner. The power returned just shortly after we got home from dinner. It was a great birthday with family and friends, simple yet memorable. :)  (Photos below Spanish)

El 17 de marzo, Andrea cumplió 31 años. El día comenzó haciendo algunas mandados y renovando la visa de Kari. Cerca del mediodía nos dirigimos a La Quinta Lupita (un hotel local) para disfrutar de su piscina y el almuerzo. Kari y Orlando habían querido llevar Andrea a Hertylandia (un parque acuático local), pero estaba cerrado el lunes por lo que se conformó con la piscina en el hotel local. Por desgracia, el agua no era la más limpia, pero le dimos el máximo provecho a ella. El almuerzo fue muy bueno, especialmente el churrasco (carne de res con salsa de ajo). Después tuvimos nuestra ración de sol y el agua, nos dirigimos de vuelta a casa. La mamá de Orlando y una buena amiga de la familia de Orlando, Melba, sorprendieron a Andrea con un pastel y regalos. El pastel fue enviado por el personal del Proyecto de Compasión de nuestra iglesia. La luz se cortó justo antes que Orlando y Andrea se dirigieran a cenar, pero la casualidad que de todos modos. Todo de Diriamba estaba sin luz, pero como el restaurante donde íbamos era sólo un poco fuera de la ciudad, todavía tenían luz. Pudimos disfrutar de una pequeña cena romántica. La luz volvió justo poco después de que llegamos a casa de la cena. Fue un gran cumpleaños con familiares y amigos, simple pero memorable. :)   (Fotos abajo)

Immigration Update / Noticias de Imigración

At the beginning of March, we received notice from USCIS that our I-130 petition has been approved! This was the petition that Andrea had to file so that Orlando can apply for residency; and it is the part that often takes the longest time to process. Now that it has been approved we are just waiting to hear from the Consulate in Managua that they have received our case and how to proceed. We know roughly what we will need to do, but need to see if there is anything specific to our case. Once we get the packet of forms from the Consulate, the timeline will mostly depend on us and how quickly we can get the information together. It will involve financial information as well as health records, a police report, and a medical exam. Once we get all of the requested information together, an interview will be scheduled. So we are still waiting (especially since the Consulate is closed right now due to the seismic activity we have been experiencing) but there is progress on our case. We are very hopeful that we will be relocating to the US later this year.

A principios de marzo, recibimos la notificación de USCIS que ¡nuestra petición I -130 ha sido aprobada! Esta fue la petición que Andrea tuvo que presentar para que Orlando puede solicitar la residencia; y es la parte que a menudo toma más tiempo para procesar. Ahora que ha sido aprobada sólo estamos esperando escuchar del Consulado en Managua que han recibido nuestro caso y la forma de proceder. Sabemos más o menos lo que tendremos que hacer, pero necesitamos ver si hay algo específico en nuestro caso. Una vez que tengamos el paquete de formularios del consulado, la línea de tiempo dependerá sobre todo de nosotros y la rapidez con que podemos obtener la información en conjunto. En ella participarán información financiera así como los registros de salud, un récord policía, y un examen médico. Una vez que tengamos toda la información solicitada reunida, se programará una entrevista. Así que todavía estamos esperando (sobre todo porque el Consulado está cerrado en este momento debido a la actividad sísmica que hemos estado experimentando), pero hay un progreso en nuestro caso. Tenemos muchas esperanzas de que vamos a poder mudarnos a los EE.UU. a finales de este año.

Catarina

The first part of March we had some last minute cancelled plans so we decided to go on a date to Catarina. Catarina is one of Los Pueblos Blancos (The White Towns) that are each known for a certain art. The art of Catarina is plants, they have beautiful nurseries full of all kinds of plants. There is also a lookout that is quite popular, that looks over Laguna de Apoyo (Lagoon of Help). It was formed from an eruption of Volcano Mombacho. Andrea put together a picnic lunch of tacos and we headed out. We enjoyed the time away and walking through the plant nurseries along the highway and on the way up to the lookout. We need to keep it in mind as a great place to go as it had been over two years since we had been there.

La primera parte de marzo tuvimos unos planes cancelados en el último minuto, así que decidimos ir a una cita a Catarina. Catarina es uno de Los Pueblos Blancos, cada uno es conocido por un cierto arte. El arte de Catarina es plantas, tienen hermosos viveros llenos de todo tipo de plantas. También hay un mirador que es muy popular, que se ve sobre la Laguna de Apoyo. Se formó a partir de una erupción del volcán Mombacho. Andrea preparo un picnic de tacos y nos dirigimos hacia Catarina. Disfrutamos del tiempo fuera y caminando a través de los viveros de plantas a lo largo de la carretera y en el camino hasta el mirador. Tenemos que tenerlo en cuenta como un gran lugar para ir, ya que había pasado más de dos años desde que habíamos estado allí.

Kari's Birthday / El Cumpleaños de Kari

Kari's birthday was on February 14th. We had fun making her feel special by decorating her room & buying her flowers and chocolate. We also took her out to lunch for a cheeseburger, and it was soooo good! Andrea made her a Strawberry cake (with real strawberries!) with Cream Cheese and Strawberry frosting. Happy Birthday Kari! We hope you enjoyed your day as much as we enjoyed celebrating you. (Photos below Spanish)

El cumpleaños de Kari fue el 14 de febrero. Nos divertimos haciéndola sentir especial por decorar cuarto & comprandola flores y chocolate. También la llevamos a almorzar una hamburguesa con queso, y fue riquísimo  Andrea hizo un pastel de fresa (con fresas reales!) con baño de queso crema y fresas. Feliz Cumpleaños Kari! At the end of February one of our good friends, Luis, moved to Costa Rica as he is hoping to study there. He has been a good friend over the years whether it was playing soccer with Orlando, coming over for dinner, helping us save the house from flooding, playing with the dogs, taking random trips with us, etc. We will miss him but hope to see him in the future whether it be in Nicaragua or Costa Rica. Best of luck, Luis! May the Lord open doors for you as you seek Him.

Al final de febrero uno de nuestros buenos amigos, Luis, se trasladó a Costa Rica porque quiere  estudiar allí. Él ha sido un buen amigo en los últimos años, jugando fútbol con Orlando, viendo a cenar, lo que ayuda a salvar la casa de las inundaciones, jugando con los perros, haciendo viajes al ultimo momento con nosotros, etc. Lo vamos a extrañar, pero esperamos verle en el futuro ya sea en Nicaragua o Costa Rica. Lo mejor de la suerte, Luis! Que el Señor abra puertas para ti como tu lo buscas.

Orlando's Birthday Surprise / La Sorpresa para el Cumpleaños de Orlando

Kari and Andrea decided to take Orlando on his first ever canopy tour for his birthday. We weren't able to go actually on his birthday, but a week late didn't make much of a difference to him. He knew we had a surprise for him but wanted it to remain a surprise until we arrived. So we got on the bus to Jinotepe and he quickly figured out we were at least getting on the Granada bus. On the Granada bus, Andrea secretly asked the money collector how much it was to Mombacho. Orlando didn't even realize we were getting off when the bus stopped. They had a truck waiting for us and thanks to Kari we didn't walk right past it! We got in the truck and the driver asked us which tour we would be doing, at which point Andrea responded with "canopy tour". Orlando put his hands to his head and exclaimed, "Oh my goodness!" as he got a rush of excited and fear.

Andrea and Kari had been on the canopy tour at Mombacho before but they had changed a few things - including a new "Tarzan Swing" and ending with a Rappel - which made it a new experience for us as well. At the end of it all, Orlando decided it was a great gift and we enjoyed the outing together. We had a picnic lunch of taco salad afterwards while Kari and Orlando enjoyed sampling coffee.  (Photos below Spanish)

Kari y Andrea decidieron llevar a Orlando en su primer tour de canopy para su cumpleaños. No fuimos capaces de ir realmente en la fecha de su cumpleaños, pero una semana más tarde no hizo mucha diferencia para él. Él sabía que teníamos una sorpresa para él, pero quería que sea una sorpresa hasta que llegamos. Así que nos tomamos el autobús a Jinotepe y rápidamente Orlando se dio cuenta de que íbamos al menos a subir al autobús a Granada. En el autobús de Granada, Andrea secretamente preguntó al cobrador cuánto era para Mombacho. Orlando ni siquiera se dio cuenta de que íbamos a bajar cuando el autobús se detuvo. Tenían un camión esperando por nosotros y gracias a Kari que no lo perdimos! Subimos al camión y el conductor nos preguntó cual tour estaríamos haciendo, y en ese momento Andrea respondió con "tour de canopy". Orlando llevó las manos a la cabeza y exclamó: "¡Oh my goodness!" mientras se llenaba con una oleada de emociones y miedo.

Andrea y Kari habían hecho el tour de canopy en Mombacho antes, pero habían cambiado algunas cosas - incluyendo un nuevo "Tarzan Swing" y terminan con un Rappel - que hizo una experiencia nueva para nosotros también. Al final de todo, Orlando decidió que era un gran regalo y disfrutamos de la excursión juntos. Después tuvimos un almuerzo tipo picnic de la ensalada de taco mientras Kari y Orlando probaron el café.
